Chapter Six: The Universal Reach
Why every human culture, in every era, reaches toward something beyond?
In 2008, a team of archaeologists excavating a limestone cave in the Swabian Jura region of what is now southern Germany found something that did not fit their expectations.1
The cave, called Hohle Fels, had been occupied off and on by early modern humans for tens of thousands of years, and the team expected the usual artifacts: flint tools, animal bones, the debris of a hunter-gatherer existence at the edge of the last ice age. What they found instead, buried in the deepest and oldest layer of the deposit, was a small figurine carved from the ivory of a woolly mammoth tusk.
The figurine was a woman. Or rather, it was an exaggerated representation of a woman — swelling breasts, broad hips, a rounded belly, the proportions of fertility pushed to the point of abstraction. The head was replaced by a carved ring, as though the maker was not interested in a specific individual but in something universal, something the female form represented rather than was. Around the neck, where a head might have been, someone had carved a groove — a place for a cord, so that the figurine could be worn.
The figurine is approximately thirty-five thousand years old.
Thirty-five thousand years. At that point in human history, agriculture had not been invented. Writing was thirty thousand years in the future. The wheel was thirty-two thousand years away. Cities were thirty-four thousand years from existence. The oldest surviving example of what we now call art was being made by people who had not yet done almost anything else we associate with civilization, using tools made of stone, in caves lit by animal fat burning in shallow dishes, wearing clothing made of hides, foraging and hunting for everything they ate.
And yet they were carving objects of what appears to be spiritual significance. Objects worn close to the body. Objects made not for practical use but for meaning.
This is not an isolated find. The Swabian Jura has produced dozens of figurines and carvings from the same period, including what appears to be the world's oldest musical instrument — a flute carved from a vulture bone, approximately forty thousand years old2 — and several representations of hybrid figures, half human and half animal, that most archaeologists interpret as evidence of shamanistic belief: a worldview in which the boundaries between the human world and a spirit world could be crossed by the right kind of person in the right kind of state.
Forty thousand years ago, in a cave in southern Germany, human beings already had a cosmology — a worldview about how reality is structured.
They already believed, or something very like believed, that the visible world was not the only world. That there were powers beyond the human, forces that shaped existence, realities that exceeded what the eye could see and the hand could touch. And they were making objects to connect with those realities — figurines, flutes, carved hybrids that expressed the crossing of boundaries between the human and the something else.

The timing of this is worth stating plainly, because it is one of the most striking facts in the entire record of human prehistory.
The people who made the Hohle Fels figurine were, by any material measure, barely more advanced than their animal contemporaries. They had stone tools, but so did some other primates. They lived in small bands of perhaps twenty to forty people, much like wolf packs and chimpanzee troops. And they hunted and foraged for everything they ate, as did every other large mammal. In terms of the daily challenges of survival, the cognitive distance between a human band forty thousand years ago and a pack of wolves was not yet dramatically visible in their tools, their shelter, or their food. They were, in the material sense, still close to the animal world they had emerged from.
And yet at precisely this moment — when the practical gap between humans and other conscious animals was at its narrowest — these humans did something that no animal has ever done at any point in the entire history of life on Earth.
They looked up at the stars and reached toward what was behind them.
They carved objects not to eat or to fight with, but to wear close to the body as expressions of connection to something beyond the visible world. They buried their dead as though death was a passage. They painted animals on cave walls not merely to record them but to enter into symbolic relationship with the forces those animals represented. The archaeological evidence shows that they tracked the movements of the moon, the stars, and the seasons, incorporating those observations into symbolic systems oriented toward cosmic order and meaning.3
No other animal has done any of this. Not the chimpanzee — our closest living relative, sharing ninety-eight percent of our DNA, living in complex social groups, showing sophisticated tool use and proto-moral behavior. Not the crow, whose theory of mind and planning capacity Chapter Four established. Not the elephant, whose mourning behavior comes closer than any other animal to suggesting awareness of death. Not one.
The cognitive gap between a forty-thousand-year-old human and a chimpanzee was, by material standards, smaller than it has ever been since. The spiritual gap was already absolute.
This is the fact that no theory of the religious instinct fully explains. All the available theories — agent detection, terror management, meaning-making, adaptationist theory — predict that the religious instinct should appear gradually as cognition gradually increases. They predict that our closest animal relatives, whose cognition has also been increasing, should show at least traces of it. They predict no sharp threshold.
But a sharp threshold is exactly what we observe. Something happened at this specific point in human development that was not simply more of what came before. And whatever it was, it produced in those early humans — living in small bands with stone tools, barely distinguishable from their animal contemporaries in daily life — an immediate, organized, apparently urgent reach toward something beyond the stars.
That reach — present at the very dawn of human symbolic thought, absent in every other conscious species — is what this chapter is about.

The pattern revealed by archaeology becomes, if anything, more striking as we move forward in time and outward in geography.
The burial practices of early modern humans are among the most consistent and revealing pieces of evidence we have about the inner life of our ancestors. To bury the dead with grave goods — with food, with tools, with ochre pigment applied to the body, with flowers placed around the corpse — is to act on a belief. It is to behave as though the dead person is going somewhere, as though existence continues beyond the end of biological function, as though there is a world in which the dead will have use for provisions and ornamentation.
The oldest known deliberate human burial with grave goods dates to approximately one hundred thousand years ago, at the site of Qafzeh Cave in what is now Israel.4 The body of a child was laid in a pit, its arms arranged around a large set of deer antlers placed across its chest. Someone, one hundred thousand years ago, believed that this child needed those antlers wherever it was going. Someone, one hundred thousand years ago, believed it was going somewhere.
One hundred thousand years of belief in something beyond death. One hundred thousand years of the human conviction that the visible world is not the whole of reality.
Move forward. Move outward.
The ancient Egyptians organized their civilization — agriculture, architecture, art, writing, political structure — around the premise that death was a passage, not an ending. The Mesopotamians used the first writing systems partly to record hymns to their gods. The Chinese built ancestor veneration into the structure of family life. The Greeks built temples to a divine order they expressed in story. The Indians produced the Vedas and the Upanishads, philosophical traditions of extraordinary depth addressing the nature of ultimate reality. Across the Pacific, Mesoamerican civilizations built pyramids aligned to the stars. Across sub-Saharan Africa, traditions of ancestor veneration and spirit communication varied enormously in their particulars but shared one premise: that the visible world is governed by invisible powers human life must answer to.
The Aboriginal Australians, who have been continuously inhabiting their continent for at least sixty-five thousand years — making them the oldest continuous culture on Earth5 — maintain a spiritual framework called the Dreamtime: a complex, multilayered understanding of reality in which the physical landscape is filled with spiritual significance, in which the present moment is always connected to a primordial time of creation, and in which the task of human life is to maintain right relationship with the powers that made and sustain the world.
Sixty-five thousand years. Separated from every other culture on this list by geography so complete that meaningful contact was essentially impossible until the seventeenth century. And yet: a spiritual cosmology. A sense of invisible powers. A conviction that the visible world is grounded in something beyond itself.
Notice what is happening as human civilization becomes more sophisticated — as agriculture develops, as writing appears, as cities are built, as philosophy matures. The reach does not disappear. It does not fade as human knowledge grows. It deepens, becomes more articulate, develops greater philosophical sophistication. The Egyptians who knew more about engineering than any people before them still built their civilization around the passage of death. The Greeks who invented logic and geometry still built temples. The Indians who developed some of the most rigorous philosophical systems in history directed those systems toward the nature of ultimate reality. Human intelligence, as it grew, did not outgrow the reach. It gave it a larger vocabulary.
The Oxford anthropologist Robin Dunbar, who has written extensively on the evolutionary origins of religion, summarizes the cross-cultural data simply: there is no known human culture, at any time or place in the archaeological and historical record, that has developed without some form of religious or spiritual belief.6 The content varies enormously — the gods are different, the rituals are different, the cosmologies are different — but the structure is universal. Everywhere humans have existed, they have reached toward something they cannot see and cannot prove and cannot touch, and organized their lives in relation to it.
That universality is present today, not just in the historical record. According to the most comprehensive global religious survey ever conducted — the Pew Research Center's study of more than 230 countries and territories — approximately eight in ten people alive right now identify with a religious tradition, representing more than five billion human beings across every continent, every culture, and every level of material development.7 And among the roughly one in six who identify as religiously unaffiliated, surveys consistently find that many still hold spiritual or religious beliefs — still feel, in some form, that there is something beyond the visible world worth reaching toward — even having rejected the institutional framework of organized religion. The instinct persists even when the institution is abandoned.
This is a fact that any serious account of human nature must confront. Ideas that are false or useless die when better alternatives arrive. The idea that the earth was flat died when navigation proved otherwise. Hundreds of specific gods have lost their adherents as the cultures that produced them were superseded. But the reach toward something beyond — toward a creator, toward ultimate reality, toward the source of moral order — has survived every intellectual revolution in human history. It has survived the Enlightenment, the Darwinian revolution, the neuroscientific revolution, and three thousand years of sustained philosophical argument against it. It is not fading. According to current projections, the number of religiously affiliated people will grow faster than the world population as a whole through 2050.7
This is not what happens to a superstition. It is what happens to a perception. A perception that something real is there — built in at the dawn of human symbolic thought, encoded partially in the genome, correlated with the highest cognitive capacity humans possess, absent in every other species — does not die when knowledge grows. It deepens. Because the more sophisticated the mind becomes, the more clearly it perceives what it was built to perceive.
The reach that began one hundred thousand years ago in a cave in what is now Israel, when someone laid a child in the earth with deer antlers across its chest, is still happening. Five billion people are doing it right now. The question worth asking is not why so many people reach. The question worth asking is what they have all been reaching toward.

At this point a careful reader will raise the obvious objection, and it is the right objection to raise.
The universality of religious belief does not, by itself, establish that religious belief is true. A universal belief might be a universal error. Human beings universally believed, for most of history, that the sun moved around the earth. The universality of that belief did not make it correct. Perhaps the religious instinct is the same kind of thing: a deeply rooted cognitive tendency that generates a consistent pattern of belief across cultures, one that was useful in the evolutionary past but does not track anything real.
Several well-developed theories attempt to provide this explanation, and each deserves honest engagement: agent detection (the brain's tendency to assume intentional causes behind events), terror management (the unique human awareness of mortality), attachment theory (God as ultimate caregiver), meaning-making (the need to understand why things happen), and adaptationist accounts of how belief in watching, judging gods enabled large-scale cooperation.8
Each of these theories is serious. Each is supported by genuine evidence. Each explains something true about why religion persists and spreads. But notice what they collectively fail to explain.
They fail to explain the sharp threshold.
If the religious instinct were a product of agent detection, or meaning- seeking, or death anxiety — capacities that increase gradually with cognitive complexity — it should appear distributed across the animal kingdom in proportion to those capacities. Crows have agent detection. Elephants show what appears to be grief at death. Chimpanzees show fairness responses and proto-moral behavior. If any of these capacities were sufficient to produce the religious instinct, we would expect to find at least traces of it in these animals.
We find none. Not a single trace. Not in any species. Not ever.
They also fail to explain the 40,000-year threshold. At the moment the Hohle Fels figurine was carved, these humans were materially almost indistinguishable from sophisticated animals. If gradual cognitive accumulation produces the religious instinct, it should have appeared gradually. It did not. It appeared at a threshold — complete, organized, and immediately oriented not just toward any explanation but toward something beyond, something cosmic, something worn close to the body.
And they fail to explain the specific direction of the reach. These theories explain why humans reach — for safety, for comfort, for meaning, for social cohesion. They do not explain what humans consistently reach toward: something experienced not merely as comforting but as real, not merely as useful but as moral, not merely as a social technology but as the source of goodness itself. The person who carved the Hohle Fels figurine was not managing death anxiety. They were expressing wonder at something universal. The theories explain the mechanism. They do not explain the target.

There is a piece of evidence that none of the above theories addresses — because it concerns not the content of religious belief but its biological structure.
If the religious instinct were simply a cognitive error transmitted culturally, we would expect its heritability — the degree to which it is passed down through genes rather than culture — to be very low. Cultural transmission is an environmental factor, not a genetic one.
Behavioral genetics research using twin studies has consistently found the opposite.9 The most convincing evidence comes from identical twins raised apart — separated at birth and brought up in completely different families and religious traditions. Because they share all their genes but not their upbringing, any similarities between them must come from biology rather than environment. What these studies find is striking: identical twins raised apart are substantially more similar in their religious beliefs and spiritual tendencies than fraternal twins raised together in the same household. The heritability of religious belief has been estimated at between forty and sixty percent across multiple studies — placing it in the same range as personality traits like openness to experience and conscientiousness.9
Pause on what this means. Something in the genome — something in the biological structure of the human brain — makes a person more or less likely to have religious or spiritual experiences, regardless of how they were raised. What is inherited is not belief in any specific God or any particular tradition. No gene codes for Christianity or Islam or any particular faith. What appears to be inherited is something more fundamental: a sensitivity that finds the universe personally significant, perceives meaning in its patterns, and senses something hidden behind the visible world worth reaching toward.
This is exactly what you would expect to find if the religious instinct were not a cognitive error but a genuine perceptual capacity — built into human biology because it corresponds to something real. Eyes have a genetic basis because light is real. Ears have a genetic basis because sound is real. If the reach toward a creator has a significant genetic basis, the most natural explanation is that it too evolved in response to something real — that the receiver was built to receive because the signal was already being sent.

Researchers at Georgetown University found something else that points in the same direction. People who are better at detecting genuine patterns in visual sequences are also more likely to believe in a God who created and maintains order in the universe — and this holds true even across cultures as different as the United States and Afghanistan, geographically separated and religiously distinct.10 Like the twin studies, this suggests the pull toward belief in a creator isn't just something people absorb from their family or society — it shows up consistently, even between people who grew up in entirely different cultural worlds.
Here's one way to make sense of that. Maybe spotting patterns and believing in a creator aren't two separate things — maybe they're the same mental skill, just pointed at two different sizes of problem. When that skill looks at a short sequence of shapes, it correctly picks out the real pattern. When the same skill looks at the universe as a whole, it produces the sense that the universe itself is a pattern — that the precise, finely-tuned physical constants from Chapters One and Two aren't an accident, but were put there on purpose.
The religious instinct may not be a misfiring of pattern detection. It may be pattern detection functioning at its highest level, applied to the largest possible object. And if pattern detection is, in general, a faculty that tracks real features of the world, the suspicion that it might be doing so when applied to the universe as a whole is at least worth taking seriously.

One further dimension to this is worth making explicit, because it is the logical consequence of everything this chapter has established, and it connects directly to what the rest of this book examines.
The existence of a receiver calibrated to a specific signal is evidence that the signal exists. This is the basic logic of information theory, not a theological assertion. Receivers do not evolve in the absence of signals. Natural selection does not build and maintain, across hundreds of thousands of years of human history, a capacity that serves no function. A reach toward nothing — toward an intelligent designer that does not exist — would confer no survival advantage, produce no offspring, solve no practical problem. It should not have evolved. And if it had somehow appeared by accident, it should have disappeared.
And yet it has not disappeared. It has persisted in every human culture in every era. It is partially encoded in the genome. It correlates with the highest cognitive capacity humans possess. It appeared at the precise threshold where human minds first became sophisticated enough to ask why the universe exists.
And it has never appeared in any other species — not in the crow, not in the chimpanzee, not in the octopus, not in any of the conscious, socially complex, cognitively sophisticated animals whose capacities Chapter Four established. If the religious instinct were simply a product of consciousness and cognitive complexity — which animals possess in varying degrees — it should appear distributed across the animal kingdom in proportion to those capacities. It does not. It appears in exactly one species. At exactly the threshold of consciousness where a mind first becomes capable of recognizing the design of the universe as a whole.
The simplest explanation that covers all of these facts is that it was placed there, and that the same intelligence whose existence the instinct points toward built the search function into the only mind sophisticated enough to find what it was searching for. The designer built the receiver into the species capable of receiving the signal.
If there were no designer — if the universe were unintended and consciousness accidental — there would be nothing to program the receiver, and nothing to find. The reach would be toward emptiness. And emptiness does not program receivers.
This is not yet the conclusion of the argument. It is the pivot point. The question this book has been asking — was the universe arranged by something? — is about to become a different and more specific question: does the something that arranged it want to be found? The evidence of the chapters ahead will address that question directly. But what this chapter has established is the foundation: the minds this universe produced are not just sophisticated enough to ask why it exists. They are specifically built to reach toward the answer. That reach — universal, heritable, calibrated to the highest cognitive threshold, absent in every other conscious species — is not an accident.
It is an invitation.

Now we find something that, if the previous arguments are on the right track, should not surprise us at all.
The one species in the known universe with sufficient consciousness to ask why it exists — the one species capable of examining fine-tuning, of discovering the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics, of studying convergent consciousness in cephalopods and birds and bees — is also, without exception, across every culture and every era and every continent, the species that reaches toward a creator.
Here is the central claim, stated as plainly as possible: the universe appears to have been arranged, by something with the capacity to arrange it, with the production of minded experience as a significant part of the goal. And the one species intelligent enough to look back at the arrangement and recognize it is also the one species built — in its biology, in its deepest cognitive structure, from the very threshold of its symbolic thought — to reach toward whoever or whatever did the arranging.
If this is true — if the universe was arranged by something that wanted minds capable of knowing it — then the universal reach toward a creator is exactly what we should expect to find. A creator who built minds into the fabric of reality would not be surprised to find those minds reaching back. The reaching is the natural response of a receiver to a signal. The religious instinct is what it looks like when the thing the universe was aiming at finally arrives — and begins, however haltingly and imperfectly, to sense what aimed at it.
If this is false — if the universe was not arranged, if consciousness is an accident and fine-tuning is an illusion and convergence is coincidence — then we need a different explanation for why the species intelligent enough to examine all of this also universally reaches toward something it cannot see. The evolutionary account tries to provide one. And as this chapter has argued, it explains the mechanism without establishing whether the instinct is pointing at something real. It tells us how the reach developed. It does not tell us whether there is anything to reach toward.
The reach is universal. The reaching species is unique. The universe it inhabits looks arranged. The arrangement looks oriented toward minds. And the minds it produced — built with a receiver calibrated to the signal from the very first moment of symbolic thought — reach back.
At some point, the simplest explanation that covers all the facts is not that all of this is coincidence. It is that it is all connected.

This chapter closes with a reflection on what it means for an instinct to be universal.
Science takes universality seriously. When a phenomenon appears in every instance of a natural kind — when every sample of water freezes at the same temperature, when every electron has the same charge, when every instance of a species exhibits the same behavioral pattern — we do not usually explain this by saying that each instance independently made an error of the same kind. We look for a common cause. We look for something about the nature of the thing that produces the universal pattern.
The religious instinct is, in this sense, a universal feature of the human natural kind. Not in the sense that every individual human is religious — clearly many are not. It is universal in the sense that every human culture, developing independently, has generated religious belief, in every environment humans have inhabited, across the entire span of human history. The universality is at the level of culture, not the individual, and it is a universality as consistent as any behavioral universal we know of.
Science asks: what produces universals? What is it about water that makes it freeze at the same temperature every time? What is it about electrons that gives them the same charge? What is it about human beings that makes every culture, without exception, reach toward something beyond the visible?
The answer that fits most naturally with everything else we have found in this book is that the reaching is a response to a reality. That the instinct is universal because the thing it reaches toward is real. That the signal was sent, and the receiver was built to receive it, and what we are calling the religious instinct is simply what reception looks like from the inside — the felt sense of something beyond the visible, in a creature made by that something to notice it.
This does not prove God. Nothing in this book is trying to prove God with the certainty of a mathematical theorem. What the evidence is doing — physics, biology, anthropology together — is building a cumulative case that the universe looks, from multiple independent perspectives, as though it was made by something that wanted to be found.
And the species doing the finding has been reaching toward it, consistently, for at least one hundred thousand years.
