Chapter Eleven: Objects That Should not Exist
The Guadalupe Tilma and the Shroud of Turin
Chapter Eight argued that the Hebrew Bible is the creator's communication. Chapter Nine confirmed that the communication is historically reliable. Chapter Ten confirmed that the communication is ongoing, witnessed within living memory by people with no reason to fabricate what they reported. Each of these confirmations, however, rests on testimony — written, historical, or eyewitness.
There is a difference between testimony and object.
Testimony can be mistaken. Witnesses misperceive, misremember, misreport. Groups influence one another. Expectation shapes perception. The history of human cognition is partly a history of sincere people reporting things that did not occur or did not occur in the way they were reported. This is not a counsel of despair about testimony — we cannot function without it, and most testimony about most things is substantially reliable. But it means that testimonial evidence, however compelling, always carries an irreducible uncertainty about the gap between what was experienced and what was real.
An object does not have that problem. An object does not misperceive. It does not misremember. It does not shade its account of itself to match the expectations of the person examining it. An object either has certain physical properties or it does not. An object either was made by a process that leaves certain chemical and structural signatures or it was made by a different process that leaves different signatures. The physical reality of an object is, in principle, accessible to direct scientific investigation in a way that the inner experience of a witness is not.
This chapter examines two physical objects. Both have been subjected to extensive scientific investigation. Both have resisted every attempt to explain their most anomalous features by known physical or chemical processes. Both exist. You can visit one of them at any time at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, where it has been on continuous public display for nearly five hundred years. The other is housed at the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin, Italy, where it has been studied by physicists, chemists, biologists, and forensic scientists for decades.
Both objects, on the current evidence, should not exist.
Not in the sense that their existence violates any known physical law — we cannot say that with certainty about anything. But in the specific sense that their known physical properties are inconsistent with any known method of production, natural or artificial, ancient or modern. No one has been able to explain how they were made. And the honest scientific position, after decades of investigation, is not that they are well-understood objects whose origins are known. It is that they are poorly understood objects whose origins remain genuinely open.

Tepeyac Hill, outside Mexico City. December 12, 1531.
Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin was a fifty-seven-year-old indigenous Mexican convert to Christianity. He had been baptized approximately seven years earlier, after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec empire, and he walked several miles each week to attend Mass at a church in what is now the northern part of Mexico City.
On the morning of December 9, 1531, while crossing Tepeyac Hill on his way to Mass, Juan Diego reported hearing music and seeing a luminous young woman who spoke to him in Nahuatl — his own language — and identified herself as the Virgin Mary. She asked him to request that the local bishop build a church on that site. Juan Diego went to Bishop Juan de Zumárraga and reported what he had seen. The bishop was skeptical and asked for a sign.
On December 12, Juan Diego reported a second apparition. The figure told him to gather the roses that had bloomed — impossibly, in December, on a barren hill in the dry season — in his tilma, the cloak woven from maguey cactus fiber that indigenous Mexican men wore draped over one shoulder. He gathered the roses, held them in the folded tilma against his chest, and went to the bishop.
When Juan Diego opened his tilma before the bishop to release the roses, the bishop fell to his knees.
On the inner surface of the tilma, where the roses had been held, was an image.
Nearly five hundred years have passed since that morning. The tilma has been on continuous public display for most of that time, exposed to the candles, incense, handling, and polluted air of one of the world's largest cities. It has survived a bomb explosion in 1921 that destroyed the marble altar and twisted a heavy bronze cross near the image — the tilma, which was unprotected by any glass, was undamaged. It has been handled without protective measures by millions of people over centuries.
The maguey fiber from which it is woven normally disintegrates within twenty to thirty years. The tilma is nearly five hundred.
And the image on it — the image of a dark-skinned young woman in a rose- colored robe and blue-green mantle, standing on a crescent moon, clothed with the sun, surrounded by rays of light — does not behave like any painted image in the history of art.

In 1979, a team of scientists from the United States, including researchers from Kodak and from various American universities, were given access to the tilma for detailed examination.1 Their findings were reported in a study that generated considerable attention and considerable controversy, and whose key conclusions have not been definitively refuted in the four decades since.
The first anomaly is the most fundamental: the image has no identifiable creation mechanism.
When scientists examined the tilma under infrared light and with magnification, they found no underdrawing — none of the preliminary sketch lines that would be present in any painted work, however skilled the painter. They found no sizing — no preparatory coating applied to the fabric to create a smooth painting surface, which is a prerequisite for any form of image-making on fabric. They found no brushstrokes. The image sits directly on the fibers of the cloth, applied to nothing, made by nothing that can be identified as a known artistic technique.
The physicist Giovanni Fazio and colleagues noted that the image's color properties change with viewing angle in a way that has no analog in painted images of any period. When the tilma is viewed from a distance, the image appears three-dimensional — the figure has apparent depth and volume that flat painted images do not possess. When sections of the image are examined under high magnification, the color appears to float above the surface of the fibers rather than to be embedded in them. The relationship between the image and the fiber substrate is unlike that of any known pigment-on-fiber painting.
The Kodak researchers found that when the image was photographed and the negative examined, it appeared to possess the tonal distribution of a photographic image — a smooth gradation from light to dark without the discrete brushstroke transitions of a hand-painted work. One researcher used the phrase "self-shading image" to describe this property.2 The image behaves, in its tonal gradations, like a photograph — in an object produced three centuries before photography.
None of these anomalies, taken individually, is necessarily inexplicable. Individually, each might be accounted for by an unusual technique, a lost tradition of image-making, or a property of the maguey fiber that we do not fully understand. The problem is the combination. Every known method of image-making leaves some identifiable physical signature — pigment chemistry, surface preparation, mechanical marks. The Guadalupe image leaves none. It has the physical properties of a reproduced optical image with none of the physical signatures of any known image-making process.

The eyes are where the investigation became genuinely extraordinary.
In 1956, an ophthalmologist named Javier Torroella Bueno examined the eyes of the image of the Virgin Mary on the tilma under magnification and observed what appeared to be the Purkinje-Sanson effect — a phenomenon in which the cornea, lens, and vitreous humor of a living or recently deceased eye each produce a reflection of objects in the visual field, creating three distinct images of any light source visible to the eye.3 This effect is present in real eyes. It is not present in painted eyes, because painted eyes are flat representations without the curved refractive surfaces that produce the effect.
The eyes of the Guadalupe image appeared to show it.
In 1979, Dr. José Aste Tonsmann, a researcher who had worked for IBM and who had access to digital enhancement technology, subjected high- resolution photographs of the eyes to computer analysis.4 His findings, published in a study that generated both significant interest and significant skepticism, claimed to identify reflected images within the eyes consistent with multiple human figures — figures that, if real, would represent the scene present when the image was formed, captured in the corneal reflection of Juan Diego opening his tilma before Bishop Zumárraga.
The number of figures Tonsmann claimed to identify — thirteen — has been disputed by other researchers, and the human tendency to perceive faces and figures in ambiguous visual data is well established. The findings of the eye examination are the most contested part of the Guadalupe scientific record, and I present them with the caveat they deserve.
What is less contested is the basic opthalmological finding: the eyes of the image appear to possess optical properties consistent with real eyes rather than painted eyes. This is an anomalous property for a flat image on cloth. Whether it is explained by the physical structure of the maguey fibers, by optical illusion, or by something else is a question the scientific investigation has not definitively answered.
The tilma remains, after nearly five hundred years and extensive scientific examination, an object whose most anomalous properties have not been adequately explained by any known process — natural or artistic, ancient or modern. It exists. It should not, by ordinary material standards, exist in the condition it is in. And it bears an image whose creation mechanism no one has identified.

The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, Turin, Italy.
The Shroud of Turin is a length of linen cloth, approximately fourteen feet long and three and a half feet wide, bearing the front and back images of a man who appears, from the physical evidence encoded in the cloth, to have undergone severe beating, crucifixion, and death by the specific mechanisms of Roman execution.
The image shows a bearded man approximately five feet eleven inches tall, with marks consistent with scourging across the back and legs, marks consistent with nail wounds through the wrists and feet, a wound on the right side of the chest consistent with a penetrating lance injury, and marks around the scalp consistent with a crown of thorns. The blood stains — which have been identified as genuine human blood of type AB by multiple independent forensic investigations — are distributed in patterns consistent with the physiological mechanisms of crucifixion, including the fluid-filled chest wound that bleeds serum and blood in separate streams, a detail that requires knowledge of chest physiology not available to any medieval forger.5
The image on the Shroud is the subject of the most intensive scientific investigation ever applied to any historical object. The Shroud of Turin Research Project, which was given access to the cloth in 1978, included thirty-three scientists from various disciplines and numerous institutions, working with equipment specifically transported to Turin for the examination.6 They spent five days in continuous examination and produced an enormous body of data that has been analyzed and debated ever since.
The central and unresolved finding of all that investigation is this: the image formation mechanism is unknown.
This is not a minority position held by researchers with a theological stake in the Shroud's authenticity. It is the consensus position of the scientific community that has examined the Shroud most carefully, including researchers who are not Christians and who have specifically sought to identify a natural or artificial mechanism that could account for the image's properties.
Those properties are individually anomalous and collectively unprecedented.

The Shroud image is superficial in a degree that has no parallel in any known natural or artificial coloring process.
The image affects only the topmost fibrils of the linen threads — fibrils that are approximately one two-hundredths of a millimeter in diameter. The coloring penetrates to a depth of approximately two hundred nanometers, which is roughly one half-millionth of a meter.7 Below this depth, the linen is unaffected. The image is, in the most literal sense, a surface phenomenon: it sits on the outermost molecules of the outermost fibers of the cloth.
No known painting technique produces this result. Any liquid medium — paint, dye, ink, blood — penetrates the fabric by capillary action, staining fibers throughout their cross-section and leaving deposits that can be detected deep in the weave. The Shroud image has none of these properties. There is no medium. There is no penetration. There is only a superficial discoloration of the outermost layer of the surface fibrils, stopping at a depth of two hundred nanometers as though it had been applied by a process that delivered energy to the surface without penetrating it.
The image is also directionless. Brushwork, printing, rubbing, contact printing, and every other known contact or near-contact image-making process leaves directional marks — traces of the motion of the applicator. Under high magnification, the Shroud image shows no such directionality. The discoloration of the fibrils is uniform in its distribution, without the linear patterns that any mechanical image-making process would leave.
The image encodes three-dimensional information. When a photograph of the Shroud image is analyzed by a VP-8 Image Analyzer — a device developed by NASA to convert photographic density into three-dimensional relief maps — the image produces a coherent three-dimensional figure.8 Ordinary photographs do not produce this result when analyzed in the same way. The VP-8 analysis of a standard photograph produces a flat or distorted relief. The Shroud image produces a geometrically consistent three- dimensional figure that corresponds to a human body lying on a flat surface.
This property implies that the image intensity — the degree of discoloration of each fibril — is inversely correlated with the distance between the cloth and the corresponding surface of the body at the time the image was formed. The closer the cloth was to the body, the more intense the image. The further the cloth from the body, the less intense. This spatial encoding of distance information is not a property of any known contact or projection image. It is the property of a field effect — a process in which energy radiates from a source in proportion to its intensity at each point, and the cloth records the spatial distribution of that energy.
What kind of energy? That question has been the subject of considerable research. The most specific hypothesis that has been proposed — and the one that best accounts for the image's known properties — is that the image was formed by a brief, intense burst of ultraviolet radiation emanating from the body itself, sufficient to superficially oxidize the surface fibrils of the linen without penetrating to any depth. Researchers who have attempted to replicate the image using laser UV irradiation have been able to produce superficial discoloration of linen fibrils consistent with the Shroud image properties. But to produce an image of the full body at the resolution and with the three-dimensional encoding of the Shroud would require a power output far exceeding any laser technology currently available.
The energy required, on the most conservative estimates, is consistent with a very brief (nanoseconds to microseconds) release of energy from the entire surface of a human body simultaneously. No known biological or chemical process produces such a release. No known physical event produces it at the scale required.

The 1988 carbon dating result — which placed the Shroud's origin between 1260 and 1390 AD — is the most commonly cited objection to the Shroud's antiquity and, by extension, to its claimed connection with the burial of Jesus. It is a serious result and deserves serious engagement rather than dismissal.
Three independent laboratories — in Oxford, Tucson, and Zurich — tested small samples taken from the same corner of the Shroud and produced consistent results placing the linen's origin in the medieval period.9 Three independent laboratories with consistent results is not something to set aside lightly. Carbon dating is a well-established technique and its application to historical objects has a strong general track record.
The difficulty is what happened next.
In 1988, before the carbon dating results were announced, an independent textile expert named Mechthild Flury-Lemberg had examined the Shroud and noted that the weave pattern of the sampled corner was different from the weave of the main body of the cloth. She did not know at that time which corner would be sampled. Her observation was consistent with a textile anomaly at the corner in question.
Subsequent analysis by chemist Raymond Rogers, using two analytical techniques with specificity considerably higher than carbon dating (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and pyrolysis mass spectrometry), found that the chemical composition of the corner from which the 1988 samples were taken is different from the chemical composition of the main body of the cloth. Specifically, the corner contains elevated concentrations of vanillin — a degradation product of lignin — while the main body of the cloth contains virtually none. Since vanillin degrades over time at a known rate, its presence in the corner but not the main body indicates that the corner is chemically younger than the main cloth.
Rogers concluded that the corner had been reweaved — repaired — in the medieval period, probably after fire damage, using a technique called French invisible reweaving. Under this technique, the repair is virtually invisible to the naked eye because the new threads are woven into the existing structure using old thread — thread that has been manually dyed to match the aged appearance of the original. The presence of cotton fibers in the sampled corner, along with the vanillin evidence, is consistent with this hypothesis.10
If Rogers's analysis is correct, the 1988 carbon dating result is accurate as a measurement — it accurately dated the corner sample — but the corner sample is not representative of the main cloth. The test answered the right question about the wrong sample.
A 2022 study published in the journal Heritage used Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering to analyze the nanostructural properties of the linen fibers from a thread near the 1988 sample site and compared them to linen samples of known date. The WAXS analysis found that the structural degradation of this thread is consistent with a date of between 55 and 74 AD — placing the cloth in the first century, consistent with the claimed burial connection.11
I am not claiming that the dating controversy is resolved. It is not. The 1988 result is from three independent laboratories. The reweave hypothesis, while supported by chemical evidence, has not been universally accepted. The WAXS result is recent and has not yet been fully evaluated by the broader scientific community. The dating of the Shroud remains genuinely contested.
What I am claiming is that the 1988 result does not definitively settle the question, and that the honest scientific position is one of genuine uncertainty about the cloth's date — not confident medieval origin. A careful reader who encounters the confident claim that the Shroud was definitively dated to the medieval period should know that this claim is more contested than it is typically presented.

Stepping back from the details of both objects, there is a question that the evidence as a whole forces.
We have two physical objects. Both have been subjected to more scientific investigation than virtually any other historical artifacts. Both possess physical properties that are anomalous in the specific sense that no known process — natural or artificial, ancient or modern — fully accounts for those properties. Both are connected, by the traditions that preserved them, to specific claimed supernatural events: one to an apparition of the Virgin Mary in sixteenth-century Mexico, one to the burial and alleged resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth in first-century Jerusalem.
The possible explanations are, as they always are in these cases, limited.
The first explanation is that both objects were produced by unknown natural processes. Perhaps the Guadalupe image was formed by some interaction between the organic compounds in the maguey fiber and atmospheric conditions in sixteenth-century Mexico that we do not understand. Perhaps the Shroud image was formed by some chemical interaction between the body and the linen that we have not yet identified. Both are possible. Neither has been demonstrated. And the specific properties of each image — the superficiality of the Shroud image down to two hundred nanometers, the complete absence of any medium on the tilma — make the natural process explanations increasingly specific and increasingly implausible. A natural process that produces an image with those properties is itself something that needs explaining.
The second explanation is that both objects are medieval or Renaissance-era forgeries produced by unknown artistic techniques that left no physical evidence. This explanation faces the same problem that the natural process explanation faces: it requires the existence of a technique that left no identifiable physical signatures in either object — no pigment chemistry in the tilma, no directional marks in the Shroud — and that has never been replicated or identified in any other artwork from any period. A forger who could produce the Shroud's three-dimensional distance-encoded superficial image on linen was in possession of a technique that exceeds current laser technology. A forger who could produce the Guadalupe image's self-shading tonal properties with no medium on prepared maguey fiber was in possession of a technique that no subsequent artist or scientist has replicated.
The third explanation — the one that the traditions preserving these objects have always offered — is that they were produced by processes outside the normal operation of physical causes: that the Guadalupe image was impressed on Juan Diego's tilma by a direct divine action, and that the Shroud image was formed by the energetic process associated with the resurrection of the body it wrapped. On this explanation, the anomalous properties of both images are exactly what we would expect: they are the signatures of processes that do not conform to ordinary physical mechanisms because they are not the products of ordinary physical mechanisms.
I am not asking the reader to accept this third explanation on faith. I am asking the reader to notice that it is the only explanation that accounts for all the known properties of both objects simultaneously, without requiring the postulation of unknown techniques that have left no trace in any other object from any period of history.

The chapter title calls these objects that should not exist. Here is what that means, precisely.
I do not mean that their existence is logically impossible or that it violates known physical laws in any strict sense. I mean something more specific and more evidentially relevant: that if you described the properties of these objects to a materials scientist or a forensic investigator without identifying them, and asked what natural or artificial process could produce objects with those properties, the honest answer would be: none that we know of.
The tilma should not exist because maguey fiber tilmas do not survive five centuries under normal conditions. The image on it should not exist because images with its optical properties and absence of any medium are not produced by any known technique. The Shroud image should not exist because superficial two-hundred-nanometer discolorations of linen fibrils with three-dimensional spatial encoding and no directional marks are not produced by any known process, natural or artificial.
These objects exist. They are not legends or theological claims or disputed historical narratives. They are physical objects in specific locations, available for examination, having been examined extensively. And their examination has produced not explanation but mystery.
Science, confronted with an object it cannot explain, has two options. The first is to continue looking — to refine the investigation, develop new analytical techniques, and remain open to the possibility that a natural explanation will eventually be found. This is the appropriate scientific response, and it should continue. The second is to acknowledge that the investigation has reached a point where the available natural explanations are not adequate to the known facts, and to ask whether the domain of explanation needs to be expanded.
The Guadalupe tilma and the Shroud of Turin have been investigated by serious scientists using serious methods for decades. The investigation has not produced a natural explanation for their most anomalous properties. The honest response to that failure is not to pretend the anomalies are not there. It is to acknowledge them, to weight them as evidence, and to ask what explanation fits the totality of the known facts.
The explanation that fits most naturally — the explanation that requires the fewest additional unknown elements, the explanation that is already supported by the cumulative evidence of the previous ten chapters — is that these objects are what the traditions preserving them say they are: physical traces of encounters between the natural world and something that transcends it.

By the end of Chapter Eleven, the cumulative case is now assembled.
Physics brought us, through fine-tuning and mathematics, to the conclusion that the universe looks arranged — that something with the capacity to select among possible mathematical structures instantiated this specific one, calibrated for life and complexity.
Biology brought us, through the Hard Problem and the convergent emergence of consciousness, to the conclusion that the arrangement was specifically oriented toward the production of minds — that consciousness is not incidental to the universe but appears to be what the universe keeps working toward.
Anthropology brought us, through the universal god-seeking instinct and its genetic basis and its correlation with pattern-detection capacity, to the conclusion that the species intelligent enough to recognize the arrangement is universally oriented toward the arranger — and that this is either the most remarkable coincidence in the history of life or evidence that the arrangement included the reaching of the arranged toward its source.
Chapter Eight identified the candidate for the channel itself: the Hebrew Bible, sealed in limestone caves before the events its prophecies describe, claiming to be the creator's communication to humanity.
Chapter Nine confirmed that this communication is historically reliable — that the document making this claim has proven, in every detail that can be checked, more accurate than its critics expected, and that the story of its central event spread in exactly the way a true and unwelcome account spreads, not in the way a fabrication spreads.
Chapter Ten confirmed that the communication is ongoing — that the creator who spoke through scripture and was confirmed through history continues to engage with humanity in the present, witnessed by hundreds of thousands to millions of people across radically different cultural and religious contexts, including large numbers with no religious motivation to report what they reported.
Physical science has now brought us, through the Guadalupe tilma and the Shroud of Turin, to two objects whose existence cannot be adequately explained by any known natural or artificial process, and whose anomalous properties are consistent with exactly the kind of physical trace this chain of communication — written, confirmed, ongoing — would be expected to leave behind.
Eight categories of independent evidence. Each examined honestly, with the strongest available counterarguments engaged. Each pointing, from different starting points and by different methods, in the same direction.
The cumulative probability of the hypothesis that the universe was made by an intelligence that communicated through scripture, confirmed that communication through history, continues to engage with humanity today, and has left physical traces of that engagement available for direct examination, stands at approximately ninety-one percent.12
Not certainty. But the evidence as a whole, examined by someone who began this inquiry with no prior commitment to its conclusion, and who has tried throughout to apply the same standards of evidence that science applies to the most consequential questions in any other domain.
Ninety-one percent.
The question now is not whether the evidence is there. It is what you are going to do with it.
That is what the final part of this book is about.

The 1979 examination of the tilma was conducted by Dr. Philip Serna Callahan, a biophysicist at the University of Florida and an expert in infrared photography, together with Jody Brant Smith, a professor of aesthetics and philosophy. BASIS FOR THE PROBABILITY INCREASE FROM EIGHTY TO NINETY-ONE PERCENT Chapter Ten ended at approximately eighty percent, reflecting the historically documented, mass-witnessed events at Fatima and Zeitoun. The eleven-point increase to ninety-one percent in this chapter reflects a categorical difference in the evidence rather than simply an additional data point. Every line of evidence in Chapters One through Ten depends, in some degree, on the reliability of observation, memory, or transmission -- physical constants measured by instruments and interpreted by physicists, ancient texts copied and preserved by generations of scribes, eyewitness testimony recorded by reporters and investigators. Each of these has been examined and found to withstand scrutiny, but each is, in principle, a claim about what was observed or recorded. The objects examined in this chapter are different in kind. The tilma and the Shroud are not claims about an event. They are physical artifacts whose properties can be measured directly, today, by anyone with the appropriate equipment, independent of any testimony about how they came to exist. The absence of an underdrawing on the tilma, the 200-nanometer superficiality of the Shroud image, the VP-8 three- dimensional encoding -- these are not reports that could be mistaken, exaggerated, or transmitted inaccurately across generations. They are measurements, repeatable by independent investigators, of objects that exist now. The eleven-point increase reflects the addition of evidence that does not depend on the trustworthiness of any witness, living or dead -- while remaining, on the current state of scientific investigation, unexplained by any known natural or artificial process. Readers who believe an adequate natural explanation for either object's properties will eventually be found may reasonably regard this increase as smaller, pending that explanation. As with the probability figures in every chapter before this one, ninety-one percent is offered as the author's honest assessment of the evidence as it currently stands, not as a final or unrevisable number.

These notes are addressed to readers familiar with Catholic theological teaching. They do not alter the book's argument, which proceeds on the basis of natural reason alone. They indicate where the conclusions of natural reason intersect with, are enriched by, or find their completion in the teaching of the Catholic Church.
CT-7. THE GUADALUPE TILMA AS SIGN AND ITS FRUITS. This chapter examines the Guadalupe tilma primarily as a physically anomalous object whose properties cannot be explained by any known natural or artificial process. This evidentialist approach is valuable and the science is accurately presented. From a Catholic theological perspective, however, the tilma is understood not merely as an inexplicable object but as a sign — the Latin word is signum — pointing beyond itself to a divine actor and a divine message. The Catholic Church's understanding of miracles, following the Catechism, is that they are signs of the Kingdom of God and confirmations of the messenger who performs them (CCC 156, 548). The Guadalupe apparition is formally approved by the Catholic Church as a genuine supernatural event, and Our Lady of Guadalupe has been declared Patroness of the Americas and Patroness of the Unborn by the Holy See. Crucially, the tilma cannot be fully understood apart from its fruits. The appearance of the image in December 1531 was the direct occasion of the largest mass conversion in the history of the Catholic Church: approximately eight million indigenous Mexicans entered the faith within a decade of the image's appearance — a conversion so rapid and so extensive that it reversed what had been a failing missionary effort and transformed the religious landscape of an entire continent. The Church understands these fruits as inseparable from the object itself: the image is a sign, and the conversion it produced is the sign's meaning made visible in history. This dimension of the Guadalupe event — its transformative effects on a civilization — lies beyond the scope of the scientific examination this chapter conducts, but is essential to any complete understanding of what the tilma is and what it does. CT-8. THE SHROUD OF TURIN AND THE RESURRECTION. This chapter presents the Shroud of Turin as a physically anomalous object whose image formation mechanism remains unknown. The most specific hypothesis consistent with the image's properties — a brief, intense burst of radiation from the body itself — is noted as consistent with, though not proof of, the resurrection claim. From a Catholic theological perspective, the Shroud is understood as a potential physical trace of the resurrection event — the most extraordinary event in human history, whose nature (as noted in Catholic Theological Note CT-4) transcends ordinary physical categories. The Church has not made a definitive pronouncement on the Shroud's authenticity — it remains an object of devotion and ongoing scientific investigation, not a defined article of faith. However, the fact that the most specific scientific hypothesis for the image's formation is consistent with a resurrection event is, from a Catholic perspective, exactly what we would expect if the resurrection occurred in the manner the New Testament describes: not a biological resuscitation but a transformation of the body involving an extraordinary release of energy from within. Pope John Paul II, who visited the Shroud in 1998, described it as "a mirror of the Gospel" and stated: "The Shroud is an image of God's love as well as of human sin. It invites us to rediscover the ultimate reason for Jesus's redemptive death." Pope Francis, who venerated the Shroud in 2015, called it "an icon of a man scourged and crucified." Neither Pope made a definitive statement on its authenticity, and the Church's appropriate caution on this point is noted. What can be said is that the Shroud's anomalous properties, as documented in this chapter, are consistent with — and find their most natural interpretation within — the Catholic understanding of the resurrection as a real, physical, and utterly unprecedented event.
